Custom Ropax Fast Ferry

This fast RoPax Ferry was designed and built by the premier shipyard of Spain in 1997. She was built to Det Norske Veritas Class DNV + 1A1 HSLC R1 Passenger Car Ferry A E). The vessel has high speed, deep-V hull form, all aluminum construction, and she is powered by conventional medium speed diesel engines.

Notable features include:

  • Top speed of 42 knots; service speed of 38 knots
  • Shallow draft of 2.44 m
  • 3 x 1st Class Salons seating 422 on upper passenger deck
  • 4 x Economy Class Salons seating 828
  • 400 m2 Duty-free Shop
  • 5 Bars & Cafes
  • Children’s Play Room
  • AAB turbine package completely & freshly overhauled by Siemens
  • Capacity for 238 Cars (or 217 Cars + 4 coaches)

Under the vehicle deck the vessel is divided into 9 watertight compartments longitudinally. The current deck configuration offers capacity for 1250 passengers on 2 decks, 238 cars (or 217 cars + 4 coaches) on 2 decks and a separate bridge deck above the passenger deck.

The 2 passengers decks afford panoramic views with large central shopping areas, bars and other amenities.

The vehicle decks have 2 Kvaerner stern door ramps. One ramp can load and discharge from the main vehicle deck while the other is used for the upper vehicle deck. A drive-around system enables the cars to board through one door and disembark through the other. A full turnaround can be achieved in 35 minutes.

The vessel is powered by 6 x Caterpillar 3616 medium speed engines each rated at 5,650 kW.

The engines are located in 2 engine rooms (3 abreast) with the 4 outboard engines

driving KaMeWa 112 SII steering and reversing water jets through a Reintjes VLJ 5520 gearbox. The two inboard engines are linked to a KaMeWa 140 BII booster water jet through a Reintjes DVLJ 5530 gearbox. Applied Composites (composite) shafts facilitate weight savings over steel shafts of around 12 tons and Geislinger composite couplings link them.

2 x 25kN contra-rotating bow thrusters can be used when maneuvering. Seakeeping is optimized by a Maritime Dynamics Inc. (Vosper Thornycroft) ride control system featuring 2 m2 nylon stabilizer fins and 2 x 4.5 m2 trim tabs. Auxiliary power is supplied by 3 x Caterpillar 3412T diesel engines driving 3 x 437kVA generators.

She is officially listed today as the world’s:

  • Largest aluminum monohull high speed craft,
  • 2nd largest monohull high speed craft,
  • 4th largest high speed craft by overall length and
  • 4th largest high speed craft by passenger capacity.
