Brooks Motor Craft, Uk Classic Staysail Schooner
A rare wooden classic working staysail schooner with a fascinating history. In 2010 she completed a museum-quality restoration with no expenses spared. New to the market! GENERAL HISTORY EROS was originally commissioned in 1939 as JEANRY for the son-in-law and daughter (Henry and Jean) of Lord White in England. The yacht was designed by the Scottish Naval Architect, William McMeek, and constructed by the highly respected Lowestoft based builders, Brooks Motor Craft UK. She was constructed to massive scantlings in composite steel frames and 3” teak planking; at the time this method of construction was popular in the United States but JEANRY was one of the first to be built in the UK in this manner. WWII broke out shortly following her christening and launching in 1939; it wasn’t long before she was commandeered by the Royal Navy for coastal patrols. She is said to have assisted the evacuation of allied troops at Dunkirk. As an Air Force pilot, Henry was killed during the war; at the end of the war the Royal Navy offered to reinstate ownership, however Henry’s widow and the White family decided against receiving the JEANRY. Stavros Niarchos, a Greek shipping tycoon and the first man internationally known as a billionaire purchased her as his private yacht, and renamed her “EROS”. Under Niarchos’ ownership in the years following the war she became a highly recognized staple of the Mediterranean yachting community and was universally admired for her grace sailing abilities. EROS eventually spent time on the east coast of the United States before being sailed to California where she eventually found her way into the hands of her present owners in 1992. Her new owners began a long and painstaking reconstruction of this fine cruising vessel. Over the following years all of the hull and deck planks were carefully removed to allow access to the steel structure which was repaired and replaced as necessary; all of the bronze bolts fastening the planks to the steel frames were renewed (20,000 in all); keel bolts were removed, inspected, and replaced where necessary. All of the piping, wiring, pumps, winches, spars, standing rigging, running rigging, electronics, and all ancillary systems on the yacht were either completely overhauled or replaced with new. There is a complete written and photographic history available for interested parties. The end result of this museum-quality reconstruction is one of the most beautiful, no-nonsense, classic wooden cruising staysail schooners afloat. EROS is easily handled by a small crew and she is capable of sailing anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice once provisioned. VESSEL WALK THROUGH EROS is a classic Gloucesterman staysail schooner; she carries a Marconi mainsail (1620 sq. ft.), main staysail (683 sq. ft.), fore staysail (419 sq. ft.), jib (1300 sq. ft.), and a fisherman’s topsail (1400 sq. ft.) as her sail complement for a total sail area of 5422 sq. ft. The Dacron sails were new in 2009 – 2010 and were built by Cheong Lee Sailmakers, Ltd. The foremast and the mainmast are Sitka Spruce; the 121’ main mast was replaced during the rebuild. There are a total of 22 working winches on board for sail handling, several with hydraulic assist. The standing rigging is all 1x19 stainless steel wire on Norseman and Swaged terminals. Turnbuckles are stainless steel and closed barrel. The running rigging is all braid, with stainless steel wire running backstays. All sails, spars, and running rigging is in excellent condition and ready for deep-water adventure cruising. The yacht is flush deck with teak bulwarks ranging from 30” to 24” bow to stern. A raised Forecastle entrance is located forward and a Deck House aft. The deck material is all original teak with each plank having been painstakingly removed, refinished and re-milled to 1-3/8” during the refit. Beginning all the way forward is the hydraulic anchor windlass, outboard motor rack, and a large working area for managing the foresails and anchoring. Just aft is the varnished teak entrance to the Forecastle, with four teak and glass butterfly hatches (2) port and (2) starboard. The skylight glass inserts are rabbited into the teak hatches and are protected by chrome plated bronze aversion bars. The Forecastle ladder-way leads down to the crew quarters and also allows access to the interior of the yacht. There is a large working deck aft of the Forecastle for working access to both the main mast and fore mast, the working winches for sail management, and for tender/toy storage; in addition there are tender davits to port. Located on the centerline of the working deck are forward and aft peaked teak and glass butterfly hatches. These hatches (and all others on board) are all original and have been constructed without any metal fasteners in the old-world method using the technique of inserting exact-fitting hardwood pieces to match the individual planks that form the hatch. The skylight glass is held in stainless steel frames and is protected from damage by stainless steel aversion bars. Each stainless hinge (all original) for both of these hatches connects to each opposing hinge via a unique stainless fitting located at the peak of each hatch. The forward hatch is located over the main salon and features six opening hatches with three on each side. The aft hatch is located over the companionway leading forward from the guest cabins to the main salon and features four opening hatches with two on either side. The hard-canister SOLAS 16 man self-inflating life raft is mounted between the two hatches. The “end” of this working deck is delineated by the cushioned on-deck settee which has been built into the foremost bulkhead of the Deck House facing forward, just aft of the main mast. A hydraulic warping winch is on deck to port of the main mast. The all-teak Deck House is located just aft of the main mast. The house features three beveled rectangular glass windows port and starboard, one centered round opening port in the forward bulkhead, and two large beveled glass windows at the aft bulkhead located either side of the double teak access doors. Constructed aft of the Deck House is a teak bevel-paneled eight person U-Shaped seating area surrounding a solid teak dining table. This area represents al-fresco ambiance at its classic best; the entire area can be covered by awning or left open to the stars, sun, and nature’s elements. Aft of the on-deck dining area is an access hatch to the machinery/engine room, and all the way aft is the classic helm with the original wood-spoke wheel with polished brass finish ring. (Note: EROS may also be steered with a jog stick using the hydraulic steering pump) Engine / bow thruster controls, joy stick for steering, binnacle, and electronics are located on a polished stainless steel frame in front of the wheel.
