Hobie Pilothouse 60
Hobie Alter crafted a culture. He introduced millions of people to the joy of water, wind, and waves. Hobie created the most successful line of catamarans in the world with more than a hundred thousand Hobie Cats (R) built. And then he built a very special catamaran for himself and for his family and friends to enjoy. This is Katie Sue. The Hobie 60 Katie Sue is a bespoke double-owner\'s pilothouse power catamaran without equal. She was masterfully constructed and launched in Dana Point in 1990. Katie Sue was built without the influence of \'big boat\' production ideas - only with Hobie\'s unique design/build talent and manufacturing expertise. She is custom in every regard and displays Hobie Alter\'s creativity, craftsmanship, and attention to detail in each aspect of her architecture. Her Divinycell cored hulls have beautifully rockered lines. She has bulbous bows beneath the water and flared bows above with resulting sea kindliness coupled with catamaran efficiency. Her sterns are elegant, extended, and designed to be functional spaces for diving, anchoring and docking. Below her sterns are \'tuna tail\' skegs completely protecting the running gear and rudders. Katie Sue\'s decks are wide and walkable; enclosed by solid stainless triple height rails and pulpits. Perched atop her deck is a masterpiece of architectural living space; a superstructure that cants fore and aft in perfect balance while exuding a constant sense of forward motion. Viewed from astern, the superstructure has the grace and symmetry of a Frank Lloyd Wright bungalow. Viewed from ahead it has the bruising capability of an Aleutian trawler. The deckhouse encloses a wide-open salon with galley, wet bar, stools, settee, entertainment center, systems monitoring, and a daybed. All look directly out at the wind and water. The view is perfect as only a catamaran can offer. The salon is sinuously coupled to individual owners\' suites in each hull. Owner\'s suites that feature island queen cabins aft and enclosed private head and showers forward. Atop all is a Northwest-style enclosed pilothouse, radar arch, and afterdeck. Her pilothouse is perfect for the California coast, the misty islands of Washington, the fjords of British Columbia, and the Inside Passage to Alaska. She cruises at 20 knots and has 14 integral fuel tanks giving her the range to reach the distant shores of Hawaii or the far reaches of the Pacific Rim. This is a magnificent catamaran and a unique opportunity to own the very best. Private showings to qualified buyers by appointment. Katie Sue\'s expansive aft deck has unique side-entry and stern-entry doors (doubling as dive ladders) set into her molded coamings. A dive compressor and dive tank stowage and a permanently mounted stern anchor with windlass are built in. On her central stern beam is a single downrigger to get down to the Kings. To prepare the catch-of-the-day, a central al fresco preparation station (with integrated sink, barbeque, and live well) is centered amidships aft of the outdoor dining area and the salon entry. A stowage locker for tools and spares is to port. Easy access to her Lugger engines and 8kw Northern Lights generator is provided through large deck hatches in either side of the aft deck. There are mounts and attachments for the addition of a 20 kw generator as well. Broad easy steps lead along each side to the foredeck and an easy staircase leads upwards to the pilothouse deck. Centered alongside the stair is a hinged glass door leading to the salon. The salon is the center for life aboard. Impeccable Koa wood cabinetry is fitted throughout as galley and entertainment center. The P-shaped galley is enclosed by a wrap-around counter with an inset double stainless sink and an opposite 4-burner stove. Above the counters are glass faced cabinets and a built-in microwave. Below the counter is a trash compactor and dishwasher. The counter space is interrupted by a refrigeration unit that has to be seen to be believed. Custom built by Hobie it sports Koa wood trim to match the surrounding mill work and a convenient pull-out bottom freezer, but pull open the latch on the main refrigerator door to reveal the most thoughtful space a floating foodie could dream of. Five lazy-susan shelves rotate inside the impossibly large refrigeration space. Delights produced in the galley can be enjoyed on the aft deck or at the counter bar and stools. To starboard of the galley is a beautiful entertainment center with television and dvd player as well as control and monitoring for all of Katie Sue\'s electrical and safety systems. Forward is a relaxed living space with an L-shaped Custom down filled Sofa to port, a central wet bar, and a day-bed to starboard. S-shaped stairways lead down to the dual owner\'s hulls. Island queens grace the aft staterooms and an enclosed private head and shower is found in each bow. The Hobie 60\'s foredeck is solid, wide, and expansive with secure footing provided by molded nonskid. A perfect place to lounge in fair weather but with hidden utility. At the bows are inset hydraulic windlasses coupled to 400\' of all chain rode at each bow. Anchors ride on custom inset bow rollers. Deck hatches reveal endless storage in the wing structure and aft set stairs leading to bow utility rooms. Below on port is the laundry room with the water maker and the port chain locker. Beneath is a hydraulic bow thruster. Below on starboard is a work room with bench space and stowage also housing fuel manifolds, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and the starboard rode locker. Below is another hydraulic bow thruster. Climb the easy staircase from the aft deck and you arrive on the pilothouse afterdeck with its hydraulic davit serving the MX 430 center console RIB shore boat with it\'s 40 hp 4-cycle Honda outboard. Also stowed on the afterdeck is a Switlik 6 man liferaft. There is ample room for lounging or the addition of another Hobie watercraft. Turn around and you are at the entry to the Northwest pilothouse. The pilothouse contains a central helm seat beside which are dual navigator seats and in front of which is the horizontally mounted wheel, engine controls, and complete instrumentation. Outboard of all to starboard is a bucket couch for additional crew or an off-watch dayberth. Just inside the pilothouse entry to starboard is a beautiful Koa wood cabinet with an integrated ice-maker, sink, and plenty of stowage for charts, navigation oracles and instruments. To port is an L-shaped settee. At the helm the twin 440 hp Luggers below are commanded by Twin Disc throttle and shift controls. Furuno RADAR and OceanPC plotters as well as VHF, GPS, depth sounders and monitoring gauges are overhead to complete the helm instrumentation. The way forward is viewed through custom safety glass enclosed in stainless steel frames and cleared by triple windshield wipers.
